What is Semaglutide & Tirzepatide?
Semaglutide and Tirzepatide are advanced medications that aid in weight loss by influencing appetite and metabolism. Together, these medications offer a powerful approach to weight management and metabolic health.
Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist which mimics the action of the hormone Glucagon-like peptide 1. The GLP-1 receptor agonist (Semaglutide) has 4 main functions:
- Increases insulin secretion
- Decreases glucagon secretion
- Delays gastric emptying
- Works as an appetite suppressor to reduce hunger and increase fullness.
Additionally, Tirzepatide is a dual combination of both GLP-1 and GIP (gastric inhibitory polypeptide) receptor agonists. Tirzepatide may have an enhanced effect on insulin secretion and appetite suppression compared to Semaglutide. Both medications can be effective in appetite suppression leading to weight loss. Studies have shown that these treatments can help to: manage blood sugar levels, enhance cardiovascular health, and result in sustained weight loss.
What are the main differences between Semaglutide and Tirzepatide?
Semaglutide and Tirzepatide are both used for weight loss in a similar manner. Semaglutide acts as a GLP-1 receptor agonist, while Tirzepatide has dual effects of both GLP-1 and GIP (gastric inhibitory polypeptide) receptor agonist. Tirzepatide may have an enhanced effect on insulin secretion, glucagon suppression, and appetite reduction compared to Semaglutide. Both are administered weekly via injection, but their side effects and dosing may vary. Your treatment provider can help determine which treatment option is best for you based on your goals and physical examination.
How does getting a semaglutide or tirzepatide injection work?
Injections are administered once a week. You can either schedule an appointment with one of our providers or take the injections home with you for self-administration. Our office highly recommends a monthly check-in to evaluate potential side effects and discuss dosing. Additionally at your monthly visit we will continue diet & exercise coaching and track your overall weight loss success.
How long do I have to be on it?
Both Semaglutide and Tirzepatide can be used for long-term, sustained weight management. Commonly reported weight loss is approximately 1-2 lbs a week. The duration depends on individual weight loss goals, weight loss progress, and lifestyle habits. Regular check-ins with our providers help determine how long to stay on the medication and if any adjustments are needed.
How do I know if I'm a good candidate?
To determine if Semaglutide or Tirzepatide is right for you, consult with one of our experienced Weight Loss Nurse Practitioners. Our Nurse Practitioner will assess your health, weight loss goals, current medications, discuss potential side effects, and evaluate if these medications align with your goals and current health conditions. Contraindications for usage would be pregnancy & breast feeding, allergy to the product, history of severe gastrointestinal disease, medullary thyroid cancer, and severe hypoglycemia. Clients with a history of acute pancreatitis should be carefully evaluated for consideration.
What are the costs and how do I get started?
Our weight loss program pricing is dependent on dosing and medication. Our Tier One dosing for these treatments starts at $399/month for Semaglutide and $599/month for Tirzepatide. Contact Splendid Skin for your initial consultation ($75). This includes meeting our Nurse Practitioner and discussing your weight loss goals. We will also collect initial labs ($99) which are required to begin treatment. If you have had labs in the last 90 days, we can evaluate those results.
